Destinations

Ljubljana
There are also land and cruise tours starting from the Slovenian capital, making it easy to explore Ljubljana and more. Often referred to as a “best-kept secret,” it was named the European Green Capital for 2016 with pedestrian-friendly streets and numerous green spaces. The Old Town, clustered around Castle Hill and overlooked by Ljubljana Castle, is especially appealing with most buildings dating to the early 16th century, constructed in Venetian-influenced Baroque style due to the devastating 1511 earthquake. Beyond the castle with its history museum and other attractions, highlights include Ljubljana Cathedral and the 13th-century Triple Bridge crossing the Ljubljanica River.

Lake Bled
Combining a cruise with a land tour that includes Lake Bled is not only easy to do, but it’s sure to be one of the highlights of your trip. This stunning vision is an image used often to represent the beauty of Slovenia. Backed by the dramatic peaks of the Julian Alps, at the heart of its sapphire waters is a tiny islet topped by the historic Our Lady of the Lake Church. Hop on a traditional pletna boat, climb the Baroque stairway leading to the church, and ring the “wishing bell.” Legend says that whoever rings it will have good luck.

Julian Alps
The Julian Alps are made up of dense forests, glacial bowls, rugged ridges, and Slovenia’s highest peak at nearly 9,400 feet. This is a significantly quieter and more remote region than other parts of the Alps and they’re within easy reach of Ljubljana, the Slovenian capital. Beyond enjoying the views at Lake Bled, continue northwest a short distance to Vintgar Gorge. A scenic path winding along the stunning Radovna River showcases its remarkable shades of aquamarine and emerald, serene pools and cascading waterfalls. Venturing into Triglav National Park, you’ll reach Lake Bohinj, a breathtaking glacial lake with beaches dotted along its shoreline.

Piran
Sometimes included in Croatia and Slovenia cruises, Piran lies directly across the Adriatic from Venice. Often compared to the Italian city, its Venetian-Renaissance Church of St. George was even modeled after the iconic St. Mark’s Cathedral. It’s the perfect place to begin your explorations by climbing to the top of the bell tower for a unique view over the coast and beaches that surround the historical center with Italy’s and Croatia’s coastlines appearing in the distance. Afterward, take a stroll on the cobbled streets that feel like an open-air museum with many colorful medieval buildings etched with Piran’s maritime heritage.
