Destinations

Zagreb

Zagreb

If you’ve booked a Croatia cruise, it’s easy to extend your stay, complementing the adventure by spending time in enticing destinations like Zagreb. The Croatian capital is a city of museums, reflecting its 3,000-year history, art and culture. The Zagreb City Museum provides an excellent overview from the Roman times to the present. There are quirky institutions too, like The Museum of Broken Relationships featuring personal items donated after failed relationships. It’s an impressive mix of old and new throughout, from the thriving coffee culture to the cobbled streets of Upper Town, home to 13th-century St. Mark’s Church and its colorful tiled roof.

Montenegro

Montenegro

Montenegro is Croatia’s neighbor to the southeast, with the border just 25 miles from Dubrovnik making it easy to visit before or after a cruise. It’s renowned for its medieval towns and dramatic mountain and coastal scenery. Old Town Kotor is a top attraction with nearly three-mile-long medieval walls following the city’s outline and climbing the hill beyond. From the top of San Giovanni Fortress, you’ll enjoy a panoramic view of the bay and Old Town. Nearby, Perast boasts 16 beautifully preserved palaces and the famous Our Lady on the Rocks, a man-made islet topped by a church and museum.

Plitvice Lakes, waterfall

Plitvice Lakes

One of Croatia’s most famous attractions is the UNESCO-listed Plitvice Lakes National Park. It’s more than worth making time for before or after your cruise, home to 16 lakes in surreal shades ranging from brilliant turquoise to deep emerald with lush greenery and over 90 waterfalls laced throughout. There are four different hiking trails, made up of scenic wooded paths and boardwalks, that will bring you to explore the Upper Lakes, Lower Lakes, or both. Discover numerous Instagrammable photo ops along the way with one of the highlights Veliki slap. Translating to the “Great waterfall,” it cascades more than 255 feet.

Venice Canal

Venice

Venice is directly across the Adriatic from Northern Croatian with multiple cruise itineraries that include the option to visit both, starting or ending in the floating city. With so much to see and do, we highly recommend extending your time here to take advantage of it. Hop on a gondola with a serenading gondolier to glide through the enchanting canals, marvel at the iconic buildings in St. Mark’s Square, including Doge’s Palace and St. Mark’s Basilica, and get lost among the maze of alleyways, discovering hidden gems. Authentic Venetian life can be savored by heading just a block or two away.

FAQ

Typically, you’ll enjoy a seven-night cruise with land tours varying in length from two to seven nights. The specific length will depend on the itinerary you choose, making it possible to suit your desired getaway time, generally from 10 to 15 days overall.

The best time of year for a Croatia cruise with a land tour is May through October. July and August bring the highest temperatures and the most visitors. For mild and typically sunny weather with fewer crowds, May through mid-June or mid-September through mid-October are ideal. Early fall is best for swimming as the sea will have warmed up all summer and stays comfortable through at least early October.

All of our itineraries can be personalized to suit your level of physical fitness. The options range from easy walking tours through historic villages and gentle treks along the wooded paths of Plitvice Lakes National Park to moderately challenging adventures such as kayaking and cycling.

While the ships can vary, the specific vessels will be listed on the itinerary. They typically accommodate 36 to 40 guests and come with spacious sundecks with enough sun loungers for every passenger, splash pools or Jacuzzis, complimentary watersports equipment such as sea kayaks and SUPs, along with common spaces for lounging, and indoor and outdoor dining areas.

The land tours will be listed on your itinerary; however, most are private or small-group guided tours. You can expect professional guides, typically from the local or regional areas in which you’re exploring to ensure local insight.

Typically you’ll enjoy a daily buffet-style breakfast with hot dishes like omelets, scrambled eggs, and bacon, plus daily three-course set lunches and two dinners (the welcome reception and captain’s dinners) both featuring multiple pasta, seafood, fish, or chicken dishes while on board your cruise. Filtered water is provided throughout along with a selection of quality local wines, bottled beers, and soft drinks.

Overnight accommodation during the land portion of the trip is in 4 or 5-star hotels that our travel experts have carefully hand-selected to ensure guest satisfaction. For example, the 5-star Esplanade Zagreb Hotel is a historic landmark in the capital with a spa, gym, and multiple restaurants. In Venice, the 4-star Sina Palazzo Sant’Angelo will put you right along the Grand Canal and has rooms with Jacuzzi tubs.
