Opatija Small Ship Cruises
Located in the northern part of Croatia is the coastal town of Opatija, approximately 18 kilometers from Rijeka. The eastern side of the town is bordered by the Adriatic Sea, and its sparkling blue waters and beautiful coastline makes it an attractive destination to stop off at during your Croatia cruise. The town itself is tucked into a bay which has lots to offer for day visits. These include architectural sites such as St Jacob’s Church and Villa Angiolina (the first building to be built in the new-and-improved Opatija). There is plenty of history to learn about in Opatija, in particular the presence of the Austrian Hungarian Empire.
The coastal promenade is a long stretch (approximately 12 kilometers) of paths and walkways. The promenade stretches from Volosko to Lovran and, on a summers day with warm weather, it is one of the most magical walks to enjoy in Croatia. Along the way, you will see key landmarks, statues (like the renowned Girl with the Seagull) and of course, stunning views of the coast, the mountains and the surrounding landscapes.
The name of the town, Opatija, means ‘abbey’ in Croatian. This certainly makes sense as a town name, as the Church of St. Jacob is one of the most visited and renowned sites there. Another centrepiece to the town is Hotel Kvarner. Built in 1884, this was the first hotel on the Adriatic Coast and although it has been renovated since, it is still an artistic and historic masterpiece. Opatija has a real local feel to it and is a wonderful destination to start your Croatia cruise from.
