Best Beaches in Split, Croatia

Split is a beautiful coastal city in Croatia that is located on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea. As the second-largest city in Croatia, Split is a hub of activity and culture, making it a must-visit destination for any traveler to the region. The city boasts a rich history that dates back to the Roman Empire, and visitors can still see many well-preserved structures from that time, including the famous UNESCO World Heritage Site, Diocletian’s Palace. One of the best ways to explore Split is by taking a walking tour of the city. The old town is a maze of narrow streets and alleys, each with its unique charm and history. Visitors can explore the city’s numerous museums, galleries, and churches, including the impressive Cathedral of St. Domnius, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the summer months, the city comes alive with music festivals, cultural events, and outdoor concerts. The nightlife is unmatched.

The top beaches in Croatia are generally found outside the cities, particularly on a small ship cruise in Croatia which can access the more secluded spots. However, if you’re looking to visit a beach and take a dip in the Adriatic Sea during your stay in Split, then there are several which can be easily accessed from the city. In this guide, we take you through some of the best beaches the city has to offer.

Bacvice Beach & Ovcice Beach

Bačvice beach is the closest to Split city center. A sandy beach with an easy shallow rake, it’s popular with all-comers. The attractiveness of the beach, and its proximity to the city, mean that it is definitely the busiest in this list.

Located just around the corner and slightly further out from the city is Ovčice beach. It is a pebbled beach with no sun loungers and few facilities. As such it is much quieter – great for those looking for a more serene afternoon sunbathe.

Trstenik Beach & Znjan Beach

Split’s most attractive and popular beaches are located to the east of the city. The beautiful, sandy Trstenik beach is maintained by the Radisson Blu Hotel and is considered the most well-kept beach near the city.

Continuing east, Žnjan beach is equally attractive but more exposed to the wind. Its blustery setting has seen it become very popular with wind- and kitesurfers. As with all beaches around Split, it’s well served by public transport, with several bus lines heading out from the city center.

Jezinac Beach & Kastelet Beach

On the other side of the city, immediately to the west you’ll find the breezy, forest park of Marjan peninsula. Amongst the cool pine trees are several walking and cycling trails; a strenuous hike takes you to the peak of Marjan Hill, from where you can enjoy fabulous views back to Split and across to the islands of Brač, Hvar, and Šolta.

Head down from the peak and you’ll find a series of gorgeous, little-visited beaches such as Jezinac, and Kaštelet. A pleasant walk of around 20 minutes from the city, these thin sand beaches which are popular with a younger crowd, with a handful of cafes and beach bars ensuring you’ll stay well refreshed.

Kašjuni Beach & Firule Beach

Located slightly further from the city, Kašjuni Beach is arguably the most picturesque in the Split area. A backdrop of rocky, pine-coated hillside and Caribbean-esque turquoise waters complete the scene.

Finally, for a family focus, we return to Firule Beach, just to the east of the city and neighboring Ovčice. With fine sand and a sheltered bay, it’s great for the youngest children to play. For sports fans, look out for the next-door tennis courts which were training grounds for some of Croatia’s most famous players.
